They are not the same desert
Agafay is a stone desert: bare, rocky hills facing the Atlas, forty minutes from Marrakech. It is spectacular at sunset, but there are no sand dunes. The photographs of golden waves of sand that made you dream are not from Agafay.
Merzouga is Erg Chebbi: real dunes, over a hundred metres high, around nine hours' drive to the south-east. It is the Sahara as you picture it — and it has to be earned.

The deciding difference: time
Agafay fits into one evening. You leave mid-afternoon, dine under a tent and come back that night — or sleep at the camp and return the next morning. It costs your trip no full day.
Merzouga takes three days minimum, two of them nearly full days of driving. In exchange you cross the Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades and Todra gorges. The journey is part of the trip, not a penalty.

Budget is not the argument you think it is
An evening in Agafay obviously costs less than a three-day tour. But per day the gap narrows: the tour covers transport, two nights, dinners and breakfasts.
So the real question is not which is cheaper, but whether you have three days to give it. If you do and you want dunes, go to Merzouga. If you do not, Agafay is no consolation prize: it is an excellent evening.
What we recommend, by length of stay
Three to four days: Agafay, without hesitation. One evening, or a night at the camp if you want the sunrise.
Five to six days: both are possible. Many do Merzouga in three days and then recover in Marrakech. A week or more: Merzouga over four days rather than three — shorter stages, and the return runs through the Draa valley.
Frequently asked questions
Are there sand dunes near Marrakech?
No large ones. Some Agafay camps have sandy patches, but Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is the only true sea of dunes reachable from Marrakech, three days there and back.
Is Zagora a good compromise?
Over two days, yes: the Draa valley is beautiful. But the dunes there are modest. It is an honest compromise, not a budget Merzouga.
Is it cold at night in the desert?
From October to April, distinctly — nights drop low at both sites. Camps provide thick blankets, but bring a proper warm layer.
