Marrakech with kids

Marrakech travels well with children, provided you give up two or three things and pick the right outings. Here is what we see year after year.

What works, reliably

The Ourika valley, because children can walk beside the water, throw stones in the river and have lunch almost in the current. An hour’s drive, no more.

The camel ride in the Agafay desert: an hour, led by handlers, at walking pace, with the blue scarf lent for photos. And Lalla Takerkoust lake, forty-five minutes away, for a day with no programme.

Verified figures

Ourika valley
About an hour’s drive; up to 15°C cooler than the city.
Flash floods
The Ourika river can rise very fast during summer storms: check the forecast and do not linger in the riverbed.
Agafay desert
30 to 40 km, about 45 minutes — the shortest desert outing from Marrakech.
Merzouga
560 km and 9 to 10 hours each way: that is what makes the tour hard with young children.
Toubkal
4,167 metres, the highest peak in North Africa, visible from the Imlil valley.
Ouzoud falls
150 km, 2.5 to 3 hours' drive — a full day there and back.

Figures checked in August 2026 (Unesco, climate data from the Menara station, public geographic sources). Where sources disagree, we give a range rather than a single number.

What works less well than people expect

The souks with a pushchair: the medina is paved, dense and busy. A baby carrier is far more practical — and keep the visit short, in the morning.

Long day trips. Ouzoud is three hours each way, Essaouira the same, Aït Ben Haddou four. With young children, those days are paid for the next morning. Save them for teenagers.

The desert with children: yes, but which one

Agafay works well: forty minutes' drive, dinner under a tent, musicians and a sky full of stars. Children love the night at the camp, provided you pack warm clothes — nights are cold from October to April.

Merzouga, by contrast, is not advisable before the teenage years: three days, two of them nearly all driving. If you insist, take the four-day version, whose shorter stages change everything.

How to structure a day

Go out early, come back for lunch, leave the afternoon to the pool, go out again late in the day. That is the structure that works, especially from May to September.

On accommodation, a pool is not a luxury with children — it is the tool that saves the afternoons. A riad plunge pool does not replace a proper heated pool.

Frequently asked questions

From what age?

All the family outings we offer suit children from about four or five, unless stated otherwise. Give us the ages in your request and we adapt.

Can children go up in the balloon?

Operators apply a minimum age and height. Tell us at booking and we confirm before holding the flight.

What if it is too hot?

Invert the day and favour water: the lake, the pool, Essaouira. In July and August, afternoon trips are best avoided with young children.
