The desert of stone, an hour from Marrakech

We arrange luxury stays, day and night passes and private events on the Agafay plateau. You book directly with us, with no platform in between, and you deal with the same person from the transfer to the last cup of tea.

Agafay Desert, Marrakech

Not a sand desert. A plateau of stone.

Agafay is dry, pale and open. The ground is rock and gravel, cut by shallow canyons that fill with shadow at the end of the day. There are no dunes here, and no crowds. What there is: distance, silence, and the line of the High Atlas closing the horizon to the south, white until late spring.

We are a Marrakech travel agency. The camps on the plateau are not interchangeable. Some are built for couples, others for groups, and a few sit far enough out to be genuinely quiet. We work with a short list we have stayed in ourselves, and we place you in the one that fits rather than leaving you to guess. Booking goes through us and stays with us. That covers the transfer, the timings, dietary requests and anything that changes on the day. More about the Agafay Desert.

The hour before dark

Agafay changes twice a day. In the morning it is flat and bright, the ground almost white, the mountains a thin grey line. By late afternoon the light comes in sideways and the canyons fill with shadow. The whole plateau turns ochre for about forty minutes, then goes blue.

That is the hour people remember. It is also the hour a camp is at its best: tables being set, lamps going on one by one, the wind dropping. Then the sky, which out here is genuinely dark.

Before you come

Where is the Agafay Desert?
Agafay lies south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the foothills of the High Atlas. It is a stone desert: a dry, rocky plateau cut by shallow canyons. There is no sand out here.
How far is Agafay from Marrakech?
The camps we work with are between 30 and 50 minutes from central Marrakech, depending on the site. We arrange transfers from your riad, hotel or the airport.
Is Agafay the same as the Sahara?
No. The Sahara begins around Merzouga and Zagora, seven to nine hours away by road. Agafay is a rocky plateau close to Marrakech. If you have three days, go to the Sahara. If you have one, come here.
What is the difference between the Day Pass and the Night Pass?
The Day Pass covers the afternoon: pool, lunch and the quiet hours. The Night Pass covers the evening: sunset, dinner and the sky after dark. Both can be combined with an overnight stay.
How do I know which camp I will be staying in?
We match the camp to your request, taking account of who is travelling, the dates and what you want from the night. Once we have held it, we send you photographs of the tents that are available so you choose the one you want. The camp is confirmed in writing before you pay.
Do you run the camps yourselves?
No. We are a travel agency based in Marrakech. We select the camps, negotiate the rates and handle your booking, your transfers and everything that comes up on the day. The camps provide the accommodation.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Winter days are clear and mild, with snow visible on the Atlas. Summer is hot in the middle of the day and best enjoyed early and late.
