Hot air ballooning in Marrakech

It is the most requested activity in Marrakech, and the one that raises the most questions. Here is how the morning actually goes, without the brochure gloss.

The morning, hour by hour

Hotel pick-up around 5.30 am — early, and non-negotiable: the flight happens at sunrise, when the air is calmest. Then the drive to the launch site and the inflation of the balloon, which is a spectacle in itself.

The flight lasts around an hour over the plateau, the villages and the first ridges of the Atlas. After landing: a Berber breakfast near the site, your flight certificate, and back to the hotel during the morning.

Wind cancellations: the question that matters

The pilot decides on the morning itself, based on wind. A cancelled flight moves to the next day or is called off at no cost. It is frustrating, but it is the only acceptable decision: nobody should lift off in unfavourable wind.

The advantage of our model: you have paid nothing in advance, so a cancellation costs you nothing to unwind. Practical advice: do not schedule the balloon for the morning you fly home. Put it early in your stay so a postponement remains possible.

The best season, and why

September to November gives the most stable conditions: calm morning air, mild temperatures, rare cancellations. Spring is beautiful but windier.

Winter works very well too — cold air is stable, visibility excellent and the Atlas snow-capped behind. Just bring a proper warm layer: the basket is cold at daybreak.

What to know before booking

Book three to five days ahead in high season: daily flight numbers are limited by aviation rules and by weather.

Clothing: trousers, closed shoes, a jacket even in summer. The basket is stable and the flight very gentle — vertigo is rare, including among people who fear it. If you want the experience without sharing the basket, the private version exists, and it is the one used for proposals.

Frequently asked questions

Why start so early?

Because the stability of the air at sunrise is what makes the flight smooth and safe. By mid-morning, thermals make flying uncomfortable or impossible.

How many people are in the basket?

It depends on the operator and the balloon. If you want it to yourselves, ask for the private option.

Can it be combined with a night in the desert?

Yes, and it is our best formula: a night at the Agafay camp then take-off nearby the next morning, with no night drive.
